Due to the continuous scarcity of building land and the tendency to limit building heights in urban planning, there is an ever-growing need to improve the architectural quality of underground building levels. A theme that is more relevant than ever, as evidenced by the heated debates currently taking place in Knokke-Heist between supporters and opponents of high-rise construction.
“Without wanting to take a position, we believe that Periscope can become a ‘game changer,’” says Xaveer Claerhout, co-creator of the innovative concept. “Basement constructions are currently mainly associated with spaces for housing technical equipment, storage and garages,” adds Barbara Van Biervliet. It should be clear that this extremely innovative view of underground architecture is inspiring, as the applications are indeed numerous. We were eager to discuss this and much more with two of the designers of this undoubtedly revolutionary concept.”
